Important Information on
Airfill Balloons Mylar/Foil Balloons 14" and under are considered airfill
balloons. They do not float with helium and require heat sealing.
This is the same across all manufacturers of foil balloons. An airfill
balloon is typically displayed on a stick.
Why don't foil balloons 14" and under float with
helium?
They will not float because the amount of helium held in the balloon is not
enough to overcome the actual weight of the foil balloon. If you want a
foil balloon to float the standard size helium foil balloon is 18".
Why do foil balloons 14" and under require heat sealing and
what is it?
Unlike foil balloons 18" and larger balloons 14" and smaller do not have self
sealing valves inside. This is not unique to our balloon manufacturers
This is the same for all manufacturers of foil balloons. Because there is
no self sealing valve inside the air can escape from the tail of the balloon. Heat sealing is
essentially the melting of the two sides of the tail of the balloon together to
make a seal. A demonstration using a bag is shown to the right.
If you do not own a heat sealer (impulse sealer) you
can alternatively use a flat iron hair straighter or curling iron on the medium
setting. Cover the ends of the hair straighter with aluminium foil to avoid
damaging it. Fill the balloon with room temperature or cooler air (not with your
mouth) using a bike pump etc.. and then seal the end using the heat sealer or
hair straighter. One suggestion is to twist and tie the balloon tail first
and then seal it after. Tying it will stop most of the airflow, but not
all of it. Heat seal it as well since this will better guarantee a
complete seal. The knot may interfere with you putting the balloon on the
balloon cup
This will take a little practice so we suggest buying a few additional
balloons.
Impulse sealers can be bought on Ebay and other websites for $20.00-$50.00.
Therefore if you are looking at getting into the business of selling airfill
balloons then it is best to invest in the correct equipment.
Do foil balloons 14" and under require cups and
sticks?
It is not a requirement to purchase cups and sticks for your airfill
balloons, but since the balloons will not float they are typically put on sticks
and displayed that way. We sell one piece sticks that are both the cup and
stick together and sticks and cups separate so you may choose. Many people
prefer the two piece cup and sticks since they feel they hold the
balloons upright better.
